Greece fully supports UN efforts on Cyprus

Athens, Jan 24 (CNA) - Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Papandreou
has expressed the Greek government's absolute support to the efforts of the
UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, in efforts to reach a
comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.
The UN envoy met in Athens today with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Papandreou. The Foreign Minister said de Soto ''has our absolute support and he will continue his efforts to reach the goal (of a settlement) within the timeframe set out by the EU and Kofi Annan, which is February 28''.|
After the meeting, de Soto met with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov, who is in Athens to participate in the EU and Russia Troika meeting.
De Soto returned to Cyprus in time for this afternoon's meeting between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the context of UN-led talks to solve the Cyprus problem.
