Cypriots from both communities meet in London

By Kyriacos Tsioupras -- London, Feb 5 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots joined voices last night in London in support of an end to the division of their homeland, Cyprus.

About 250 Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypritos living in London gathered in the House of Commons at the initiative of six Labour and three Conservative MP's.

In total, 16 British MPs attended the gathering, expressing satisfaction with the initiative as well as their support for a solution to the Cyprus problem.|

The British parliamentarians expressed the need for creating a climate of creative compromise in finding a settlement.

The meeting was co-chaired by Greek Cypriot Haris Sofoklides, Chairman of the Cyprus Federation of Great Britain, and Turkish Cypriot Hasan Raif, Chairman of the "Platform for Peace for Cyprus".

They said the aim of the event was to express the support of the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots living in Britain to the efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Both sides expressed various views on Annan's peace plan on Cyprus, stressing the need to find a solution the soonest to improve relations between the two communities.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.

UN-led direct talks are currently underway to find a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem by the end month.
