In a telegram congratulating Papadopoulos on his victory yesterday, Prodi hoped that his election would lead to a solution of the Cyprus problem, based on the UN Secretary-General's plan for a comprehensive settlement.

The EU Commission commended outgoing President Glafcos Clerides for his role in leading Cyprus successfully to the conclusion of its accession negotiations and for his contribution to the peace effort in Cyprus.|

Prodi said, "I am sure that under your leadership, Cyprus will continue to prepare successfully for membership of the European Union by 1 May 2004", adding that his "broad knowledge on EU matters obtained as President of the European Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives will guarantee such an achievement".

The Commission President further said he expects that Papadopoulos' election "will lead to the solution of the Cyprus issue based on the comprehensive settlement as proposed by the UN".

Meanwhile, the Commission "underlined the role played by outgoing President (Glafcos) Clerides in the preparation of Cyprus for EU membership", noting that "thanks to his personal endeavours Cyprus was able to conclude successfully the accession negotiations with the EU".

"The Commission is equally grateful for his continued and personal contribution to find a solution to the Cyprus issue", he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.
