Kofi Annan: Cyprus solution possible by end of February
by Nicos Bellos --
Brussels, Feb 17 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan continues to
believe that it is still possible to reach a negotiated settlement in Cyprus by the
end of February, a deadline set out in a peace proposal he put forward to the
two sides in Cyprus.
''I hope Iraq will not distract me from my objective to reach an agreement by the end of February,'' Annan told a press conference here, when asked if the Iraqi crisis had sidelined the question of Cyprus.
''I think it is still possible,'' Annan added.
The Secretary General is due in Cyprus next week, from 26-28, as the deadline for an agreement is drawing near.|
Annan congratulated president elect in Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos on his election victory on Sunday, and said Papadopoulos was well versed on the question of Cyprus and a seasoned negotiator.
