Simitis praises Clerides for his work on Cyprus, EU accession

By Nicos Markides -- Brussels, Feb 18 (CNA) ? Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis congratulated outgoing President Glafcos Clerides for his handling on the island's accession course and the peace process for a Cyprus settlement.

The two met in Brussels here Tuesday, together with the foreign ministers of both countries.

Speaking before the meeting, the Greek Premier and President of the European Council, Simitis, congratulated Clerides for his handling regarding the accession procedure and efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. He also expressed admiration for Clerides' work as well as appreciation for his personality.

Clerides said the success of his work was due to the support and help of the Greek government.|

Clerides, who lost Sunday's elections to Democratic Party leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, said he was happy that while he is leaving office, Simitis remains Prime Minister.

He also said that Simitis would continue the efforts incessantly.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.
