Russia reaffirms Cyprus solution based on UN resolutions
2003-03-06 14:07:20

Nicosia, Mar 6 (CNA) -- Russia has reaffirmed its readiness to participate actively in the international efforts for the purpose of promoting a just, lasting and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

A press release issued by the Russian Embassy in Nicosia underlines that ''the noticeable intensification of the activities within the framework of the UN Secretary General's mission of good offices on Cyprus has proved that the process of Cyprus settlement enters into the intensive and crucial stage.''|

''Moscow considers that the achievement of the mutually acceptable agreements on Cyprus must be the result of direct negotiations under the UN aegis between the Cypriots themselves - Greeks and Turks,'' it says.

The press release adds that the ''UN Secretary General with the support of the Security Council is called to continue to render necessary constructive assistance to this process acting in close contact with UN Security Council members and the Cyprus sides.''

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has asked the two sides on the island to go to The Hague on 10 March and declare whether they are committed to submit the Foundation Agreement to approval at separate referenda on March 30, in order to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
