Annan: We had to give up efforts
by Apostolis Zoupaniotis --
United Nations, Mar 14 (CNA) -- ''We had to give up the efforts of getting a
united Cyprus into the EU'', UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said here
yesterday referring to the collapse of the UN-led Cyprus talks in The Hague,
earlier this week.|
''I've just come back from The Netherlands, where we worked on the Cyprus issue. As close as we thought, it was not to be, and we had to give up the efforts of getting a united Cyprus into the European Union when they do the accession ceremony on the 16th of April,'' Annan said.
His special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto arrives here over this weekend to submit his report to the SG and brief the UN Security Council.
Meanwhile, the Cyprus Permanent Representation to the UN has concluded its contacts with the members of the Security Council and other representations and briefed foreign diplomats on the outcome of The Hague talks and their collapse due to the instransigent stance of the Turkish government and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
