Foreign Minister in Brussels summit
2003-03-14 17:43:41

Nicosia, Mar 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou will represent President Tassos Papadopoulos at next week's European Union meeting between the 15 member states and the leaders of the 10 acceding and the three candidate countries.

''The Foreign Minister will represent the Republic of Cyprus at the lunch between EU members and the 13 heads of state on Friday, 21 March, in Brussels, in the framework of the EU summit,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides announced here today.|

President Papadopoulos will be in the US for medical reasons.

Invited to comment on the intension of current EU Council president, Greek premier Costas Simitis, to brief leaders about the failure of the UN-led peace talks, the spokesman said that ''Cyprus, as an acceding country, could not raise any such issue, the appropriate person to do so is the current EU president.''

After marathon attempts earlier this week in The Hague by the UN to salvage a peace process they began in January last year, Secretary General Kofi Annan declared the end of his latest efforts to find a political settlement in Cyprus.

Annan said Papadopoulos had agreed to his call to put to a referendum a peace proposal under certain conditions but Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, backed by Ankara, rejected the proposal.
