Britain deplores "arrests" in occupied Cyprus
by Kyriakos Tsioupras --
London, Mar 30 (CNA) -- Britain has expressed concern about this week's
"arrests" of six Turkish Cypriots, including a party leader and prominent trade
unionists, in Turkish occupied Cyprus, as they staged a symbolic referendum
on a UN peace proposal.
"We have followed events of the 25th March with great concern. We deplore any actions by the Turkish Cypriot 'authorities' which prevents Turkish Cypriots from enjoying their rights of assembly and to express peacefully and freely their political views," an official spokesman of the British Foreign Office has told CNA, when invited to comment on the incident.|
"We have raised our concern with the Turkish Cypriot 'authorities' and we are going to continue following this closely," he added.
