Government studying measures for Turkish Cypriots
2003-03-31 14:12:26

Nicosia, Mar 31 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government would like to be in a position to announce measures in support of Turkish Cypriots prior to the signing of the Accession Treaty with the European Union in mid April, if possible, spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said here today.

He said these practical measures aim to create a climate of cooperation and to assist the search for a political settlement, adding that President Tassos Papadopoulos and the head of the delegation of the European Commission Ambassador Adriaan van der Meer discussed this issue at their meeting today.|

''If the preparatory work for the measures is completed, the Cabinet will consider the suggestions for these measures at its next meeting on Thursday,'' the spokesman told his press briefing today.

He said ''it would be good if these measures are announced before April 16, when Cyprus signs the Accession Treaty'' with the EU but noted that these two topics (treaty and measures) are two separate issues.
