2003-04-02 14:26:43

Nicosia, Apr 2 (CNA) - British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Denis MacShane said Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has maintained a constructive approach towards efforts to solve the Cyprus problem and was prepared to put a UN proposal to a referendum.|

1600:CYPPRESS:10 In a written answer to a question on the Cyprus problem put forward by Andrew Dismore of the House of Commons, MacShane notes that ''President Papadopoulos has taken a constructive approach towards the UN process'' and that ''at a meeting in The Hague on 10 and 11 March, he was prepared to put the UN Secretary General's plan to a referendum''.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

UN-led talks ended in a deadlock in March after Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash declined a UN suggestion to put to a referendum the peace proposal.
