2003-04-02 14:40:49

Nicosia, Apr 2 (CNA) ? The National Council authorized President Tassos Papadopoulos to reply to a letter by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said after the extraordinary meeting that the Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, would convene again on Monday, 7 April.

He added that the reply to Denktash would be given before Monday.|

Denktash earlier Wednesday said he has sent a letter to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos containing ideas he believed could initiate a process of dialogue and consultation, leading to a working relationship.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.

UN-led talks ended in a deadlock in March after Denktash declined a UN suggestion to put to a referendum the peace proposal.
