Brussels, Apr 3 (CNA) -- The European Commission wishes to see a peaceful
resolution of the Cyprus question which could be achieved within the UN
framework, Jean Christophe Filori, European Commission spokesman said
here today.
His comments come as a response to an announcement on Wednesday by
Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash of what he has described as a package
of measures to assist a political settlement of the Cyprus problem.
''The Commission takes into consideration Denktash's initiative. We support
all efforts for a solution in Cyprus, but we continue to believe that this
objective can best be achieved through the UN framework,'' Filori said.|
Filori also noted that the Commission is waiting for the outcome of the
discussion on Cyprus at the UN Security Council, in the coming days.
Denktash announced the measures at a press conference, following the
collapse of the latest UN attempt to reach a solution and criticism from key
players in the peace process about his negative stand at the talks.
The Security Council is expected to be briefed about the talks in the next few
days and is likely to adopt a resolution or issue a statement on the matter.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and
occupied 37% of its territory.
