Measures for Turkish Cypriots not substitute for solution
2003-04-08 10:13:35

Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said today that the measures for the Turkish Cypriots were not to replace a solution but were temporary and would cover the transitional period until a solution of the Cyprus problem was achieved.

Chrisostomides said that the untimely and unofficial publication of the measures spurred discussions and reactions on behalf of the so-called ''opposition'' in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, adding that the government believes these reactions are ''unjustified''.|

He said the National Council, top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem, convened yesterday and discussed ''policy issues regarding the Turkish Cypriots on the basis of the wish that they enjoy all the benefits of all citizens of the Republic of Cyprus to the greatest degree possible''.

''The measures are not a substitute for a solution. They are temporary measures for the transitional period until a solution. The untimely and unofficial publication of the measures created discussions and reactions on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot opposition, which in our opinion were unjustified'', the Spokesman said.

Chrisostomides replied negatively to a question if the government intended to review the measures after the reactions.

''The measures, when the necessary decisions are taken, will be announced irrespective of any position or statement of the Turkish Cypriot side, either from Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash or any opposing forces'', he said.
