European Parliament to give its assent for EU enlargement
by Katerina Nicolaou--
Strasbourg, Apr 8 (CNA) - The European Parliament plenary is expected to
give tomorrow its assent for the enlargement of the European Union with the
accession of ten countries, including Cyprus, Elmar Brok Chairman of the
Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy
Committee has said.
Speaking at a press conference here today Brok expressed certainty that ''the vote will be positive'' noting that ''the last obstacle for the enlargement has been overcome'' and the political groups will approve this evening the proposal of the Budget Committee.|
He also expressed the belief that Euro MPs will approve the draft resolution on the accession of the 10 countries without any substantial changes. Brok explained that tomorrow some 626 Euro MPs - the Plenary of the European Parliament - are called to approve not the Accession Treaty but the application of each candidate country on the basis of the Treaty to be signed in Athens on 16 April.
On March 19, 2003, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament approved a draft resolution, which if adopted will read that the European Parliament gives its assent to Cyprus' application to join the European Union.
The resolution reads that the European Parliament ''gives its assent to the application by the Republic of Cyprus to become a member of the European Union.''
