Iacovou says UN resolution to be product of compromise
2003-04-08 16:26:55

Nicosia, Apr 8 (CNA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Iacovou expressed here today the belief that the UN Security Council resolution on Cyprus would be the product of a compromise between the five permanent members of the Council, adding that the Greek Cypriot side was trying to obtain the best possible resolution.

Answering a question Iacovou said discussions on the Cyprus problem at the Security Council were continuing today. ''Yesterday they did not get anywhere, there were different views among the five permanent members,'' he said, adding that ''there are rumours that Russia will submit her own resolution''. |

He said ''in the end we are going towards a compromise regarding the resolution, I cannot guess its content at this moment but the aim is to get a resolution by Thursday''.

Iacovou noted that the Greek Cypriot side was trying to obtain ''the best possible resolution for our side''.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
