Nicosia, Apr 10 (CNA) - The Cyprus government welcomed with satisfaction and jubilation the approval on Wednesday by the European Parliament of Cyprus' application to join the European Union.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides described the development as a further significant step towards completing the island's accession to the EU.|

''The result of yesterday's voting at the European Parliament is a further, significant step in the island's accession to the European Union'', the Spokesman said and noted with satisfaction the positive statements made by various officials on Cyprus.

This, he added, reflects the view of the UN Secretary-General that the realities of international law and international politics must be taken into consideration in order to solve problems.

The Spokesman said he did not attach any significance to the votes against or abstentions during yesterday's voting.

''The result of the voting must be welcomed with jubilation and satisfaction by all'', Chrisostomides said and expressed hope that the Cypriot House of Representatives will be the first to ratify the Accession Treaty.

The European Parliament approved on Wednesday, by an overwhelming majority, the accession of the Republic of Cyprus to the Union.

Euro MPs cast their vote on a report by the Rapporteur for the island's accession as follows: Of the 562 votes cast, 507 were in favour, 29 against and there were 26 abstentions.
