By Nicos Bellos--
Athens, Apr 16 (CNA) -- European Parliament President Pat Cox welcomed Cyprus' EU accession, which he hopes will act as a catalyst for the solution of the island's longstanding political problem.
Answering questions at a press conference here today after a meeting with the 25 EU leaders, Cox speaking, as he noted, on behalf of the European Parliament, he welcomed Cyprus' accession.
Noting that Cyprus' accession was favoured by all European institutions, he added that the optimum condition would be the accession of a reconciled Cyprus. However, he noted, the failure to reach a Cyprus agreement should not keep Cyprus out of the European Union.|
Asked to comment on reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul might walk out of the signing ceremony, Cox said he did not wish to comment on speculations.
Cyprus today seals its EU accession in an historic signing ceremony under the Acropolis in Athens.
