Filori says Cyprus settlement can be found after accession
2003-04-16 13:53:15

by Maria Koniotou -- Athens, Apr 16 (CNA) - The EU considers that there is a possibility of a Cyprus settlement after the accession of the island to the EU and that is why in the Protocol for Cyprus it is provided that the suspension of the application of the acquis communautaire in the northern part of the island will be lifted once Cyprus is reunited, Jean Christophe-Filori, spokesman of Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen, told CNA.

''We only recognise one state and now the whole island joins the EU but the acquis will not apply in the northern part until a settlement is found'', Filori said, adding that ''we do not think this is the end of the road'', as measures must be taken so that the areas under Turkish occupation will be prepared to apply EU laws and regulations when the island is reunited.|

Cyprus, which signed today the Accession Treaty along with nine other countries, has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
