Schwimmer says easing restrictions step of historic proportion
2003-04-28 20:43:07

Nicosia, Apr 25 (CNA) - Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer has called the easing of the easing of restrictions on the free movement of Cypriots, imposed by the Turkish occupation regime, as ''a step of historic proportion towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue''.

According to a press release, Schwimmer said ''it is very important that Europe now supports the process of reconciliation in Cyprus, in order to put any political solution on a stable basis in the hearts and minds of Cypriots''.|

He added that in order to support the drive towards a solution, the Council of Europe envisages inviting leaders from all Cypriot parties to Strasbourg, so that they may renew their commitment of cooperation in finding and implementing a settlement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
