by Nicos Bellos-- Brussels, May 2 (CNA) - The European Commission has welcomed the Cypriot government's measures to support the Turkish Cypriots and has announced that it will submit proposals on May 21 to facilitate rapprochement.

Replying to questions, Jean Christophe Filori, spokesman of EU enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen, said the European Commission welcomes the measures and every effort aiming at bringing the two sides in Cyprus closer.|

He said one should remember that the EU's aim remains the same, which is ??to see the accession of a reunited Cyprus to the EU''.

Filori said the Commission is preparing a package of measures to encourage rapprochement and enhance the economy in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

The proposal will provide for 15 million euros in financial assistance and a series of measures, among which to facilitate trade from the occupied areas to the EU, he added.
