UN official praises enthusiasm of people crossing the divide

Nicosia, May 5 (CNA) - Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and Chief of Mission Zbigniew Wlosowicz said here Monday the enthusiasm shown by the people on the island following the ease in restrictions in the freedom of movement is encouraging.

He further said UNFICYP is working round the clock to make the crossing facilities smoother and more efficient and praised the government of Cyprus for its cooperation towards this end.

Speaking after being received by Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, Wlosowicz said he shared with the President his observations on the latest developments on the island.|

UNFICYP, he said, is directing what is going on since April 23 when the easing of restrictions on the free movement of Cypriots, which the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus had imposed, was announced.

''We are trying to make sure that the crossing through the buffer zone is as smooth and efficient as possible. Lots of people want to cross the limits and the capacity of the crossing points is limited'', he added.

The UN official said he is hoping another crossing point at Ayios Dometios will open soon, noting that ''UNFICYP is working 24 hours a day to make crossing facilities in the buffer zone work well''.

Wlosowicz further emphasised that ''we enjoy good cooperation with the authorities without which not much could be achieved''.

''At the same time I would like to say the same about the people of Cyprus for their enthusiasm is indeed encouraging'', he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
