Iacovou: A reunited Cyprus to join the EU
Nicosia, May 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou has stressed that it is possible for a reunited Cyprus to join the European Union on May 2004, allowing to all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, to enjoy fully the benefits of a European citizen and securing a safe and prosperous future.
In a message on Europe Day (9th May), Iacovou expressed the hope that the perspective of Cyprus' EU accession, which caused the first crevices in the wall that separates the island for thirty years will become ''the torrent that will drift away the wall and wash away the results of invasion, occupation, and violation of human rights.''|
He underlined that ''Cyprus as a new member of the European family will continue to work for the consolidation of stability in Europe and eastern Mediterranean, contributing to the completion of the European Union founders' vision.''
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
