EU measures for Turkish Cypriots going to Council in June
2003-05-19 19:15:11

Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) - Head of the European Commission's delegation in Cyprus Adriaan Van der Meer said today that at the beginning of June the Commission would convey to the European Council and all community institutions its communication regarding the package of measures for the Turkish Cypriots.

Van der Meer said that this was ''a framework communication where we indicate different avenues we would like to implement'', adding that the Commission had been asked by the Copenhagen Council to do so.|

Commenting on statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who said he would reject any EU term to use documents and stamps of the Republic in Cyprus to facilitate the export of Turkish Cypriot products, Van der Meer said ''I take note of his comments''.

''I hope to discuss them in the coming days with some of the usual interlocutors in the north'', he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
