Solana says Cyprus question UN responsibility
2003-05-26 18:40:05

by Gregory Savva-- Heraclion, May 26 (CNA) -- The solution of the Cyprus problem is the responsibility of the UN Secretary General, EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana said here today.

Replying to a comment by CNA that while the Palestinian issue seems to be moving forward, the Cyprus issue remains stagnant, Solana said ''I would like very much to see the Cyprus problem solved'', adding that the opportunity was presented with the solution plan submitted by UN chief Kofi Annan.|

''I hope that still we have time to do it before the mid of next year and I would love to see that taking place'', he noted.

Invited to say if the EU would show the same movement on the Cyprus problem as it did on the Palestinian issue, Solana said ''we put all our energy behind the Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan who is responsible and the one leading that process''.

Asked if he would support the appointment of a European Commissioner responsible for the Cyprus question, Solana said that the Cyprus question is ''a responsibility of the UN Secretary General''.

''We put all our trust, all our confidence on the Secretary General'', he noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
