Papadopoulos arrives in St. Petersburg for EU-Russia summit

St. Petersburg, May 29 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos arrived in St. Petersburg today, at the invitation of the Russian government to attend the EU-Russia summit.
On arrival, President Papadopoulos referred to the traditionally close relations between Cyprus and Russia, noting that he flew to St. Petersburg ''at the invitation of the Russian government for the EU-Russia summit''.
''I consider it a great honour for me to be here as a representative of the Republic of Cyprus because our relations with Russia and its people are traditionally old and close'', President Papadopoulos told CNA.
President Papadopoulos was welcomed at the airport by Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Denisov.|
Asked whom he would be meeting in St. Petersburg, apart from Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, the President said ''we shall see''.
During his stay in St. Petersburg, President Papadopoulos will also attend the celebrations for the 300th anniversary of the historic town.
The President is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Iacovou, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides, Undersecretary to the President Christodoulos Pasiardis, Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the EU Theophilos Theophilou and the Republic's Ambassador in Moscow Andreas Georgiades.
