Security Council members express support to Annan's plan
Nicosia, Jun 12 (CNA) -- President of the Security Council, Russias Permanent Representative to the UN Sergey Lavrov said yesterday in New York that all Council members support the UN Secretary Generals plan for a solution to the Cyprus problem, pointing out that Annan's proposal is the best solution to the problem.
Speaking after yesterdays Security Council meeting, Lavrov said that when the Council discussed the report of the Secretary General on Cyprus "all members expressed their support to the view of the Secretary General, namely, that his plan is still not only on the table but is the best solution to the Cyprus problem.|
Deputy Spokeswoman for the UN Secretary General Hua Jiang said that at its formal meeting yesterday the Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 1486 which extends the mandate of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus for six months and also endorses the Secretary Generals recommendation that the missions Civilian Police component be increased by 34 officers.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
