Nicosia, Jun 17 (CNA) - British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has expressed the regret of his government because it was not possible for a reunited Cyprus to join the European Union. Speaking recently before the House of Commons' Foreign Affairs Committee about the Salonica European Council and replying to questions on Cyprus, Straw said foreign envoys ...

... the government of Greece and the new Turkish government have worked to achieve a settlement. Straw also expressed regret over statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, noting that the Turkish Cypriots have proved that they want the island to be reunited.|

The Foreign Secretary added that the British government wishes to assist Turkey in its European course.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
