Foreign Ministry condemns bomb attack on UN headquarters in Baghdad

Nicosia, Aug 20 (CNA) The Foreign Ministry, in a statement here Wednesday, condemned the bomb attack against the UN headquarters in Baghdad on Tuesday and expressed its deep regret for the victims, including UN Secretary-General's Special Representative to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello.

In its statement, the Foreign Ministry expressed sympathy to the members of the victims' families, Secretary General Kofi Anan and the entire UN staff.

"The Foreign Ministry believes that such actions should not be allowed to influence the humanitarian work and reconstruction of Iraq which must continue despite these adverse conditions", the statement said.|

"This incident confirms once again the dire need for the international community to form a common front against terrorism, which is a threat for every country and society. Cyprus has repeatedly declared that it remains dedicated in the fight against this irksome phenomenon", the Foreign Ministry added.

The Foreign Ministry further expressed relief that Cypriot Assistant Secretary-General Benon Sevan, (Executive Director of the Iraq programme Oil-For-Food) escaped danger and is fine.

The Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry, Sotos Zackheos, following instructions by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, immediately contacted Mr. Sevan's wife after the bomb attack and expressed Cyprus' sympathy, the statement concluded.
