Spokesman: Cyprus is a single constituency
2003-09-05 10:30:36

Nicosia, Sep 4 (CNA) ? Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here Thursday that the decision regarding the approval of the bill on the European Parliament elections next year depends on the political leadership and deputies.

The Spokesman said the President of the Republic has sent a letter to all parties to participate in a subcommittee to deal with the particulars of the bill, which will pave the way for the elections.

?It is a serious issue and the government is anticipating the results of the discussions of the political parties at the subcommittee?, the Spokesman said, adding that if necessary, the discussion will move to the National Council.

Regarding Attorney-General's Solon Nikitas suggestion that voting is voluntary, Chrysostomides said the suggestion ?was made under the form of amendments or improvements to the text of the bill for the European Parliament elections which was tabled at the House. The issue is solely political, the political decision lies with the House and the political parties at the plenary when the bill will be voted on?, he said.

What is a fact, Chrysostomides added, is that we are talking about ?a single election constituency with a single electoral roll?.

Regarding the participation of Turkish Cypriots, the Spokesman said it was being examined, adding that the equality of rights of citizens is being secured both by the Constitution and the bill itself.

Invited to comment on statements made by the leader of the Republican Turkish Party Mehmet Ali Talat and the leader of the newly formed ?Solution and European Union? party Ali Erel that they do not accept a single election roll, Chrysostomides said their views ?are being taken into consideration?.
