Government evaluating developments in Turkish Cypriot community
Nicosia, Sep 5 (CNA) - Developments in the Turkish Cypriot community are
being monitored by the Greek Cypriot side and are taken into consideration,
Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today, invited to comment
on the protocol signed by the ''opposition'' parties in the Turkish
occupied areas of the island.
Asked about the pledge made by the Republican Turkish Party, the Peace and Democracy Movement and the Solution and EU Party in the protocol that as a first step after the illegal ''elections'' they will terminate the duties of Rauf Denktash as negotiator and will appoint a new team of negotiators, Chrysostomides said ''our efforts to resume negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem will continue with the same determination, irrespective of the result of any deliberations within the Turkish Cypriot community''.
''What we pursue is a change of stance by Turkey mainly but also of the Turkish Cypriot leadership so that negotiations can resume on the basis of the Annan Plan for a final settlement of the Cyprus problem'', he added.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the island's territory.
