Cyprus extends condolences to Sweden
Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has expressed deep
condolences to the family of Anna Lindh, Swedish Foreign Minister, and
to the people of Sweden.
''This is a sad day, the government wishes to extend its deep condolences to her family and to the people of Sweden,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, after the official announcement of her death following yesterday's assassination attempt.
He said Lindh was ''a strong supporter of Cyprus' accession to the EU and backed EU enlargement to ensure that stability and security were safeguarded in Europe and that the continent is no longer divided.''
The spokesman described her as ''a friend of Cyprus who always worked for the right solution of its political question'' and noted that she was particularly critical of human rights violations in Turkey.
He recalled that Lindh visited Cyprus in 2000 before Sweden assumed the six-monthly rotating EU presidency.
