On the second anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, I would like to extend on behalf of the people of the Republic of Cyprus, and myself, our deepest sorrow and unwavering solidarity to the families of the victims and to the Government and the people of the United States of America.
Cyprus and the entire world remember with abhorrence that dark day on which terrorism raised its ugly face. This affront, contrary to whatever the terrorists may have expected, strengthened the determination of the international community to act as one in pursuing the campaign for the eradication of terror and the evil it represents.
Since the very first moment, the Republic of Cyprus expressed its willingness and its resolve to join the United States and the international community in the fight against terrorism. Having experienced aggression, the suppression of freedom and the continued violation of their human rights, the people of Cyprus stood in solidarity with the people of the United States, and remain determined to help the world community in its coalition against injustice, and the forces which promote intolerance and hatred.
On this tragic anniversary, the Republic of Cyprus, renews its commitment to cooperate in the international efforts to eradicate terrorism and its root causes, and to promote those inalienable values on which the civilized world has depended for centuries.
Today, a day of remembrance, Cyprus shares in your grief and joins in your prayers.
President of the Republic of Cyprus
