Mr. Evriviades will be the new Ambassador of Cyprus to the US
Nicosia, Oct 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Ambassador to The Hague, Euripides L. Evriviades was awarded the title of the ?Ambassador of the Year? by the foundation ?Friends of Saur? (Stichting Vrienden van Saur) during a special ceremony on Monday.
The foundation has been supporting philanthropic, cultural and other activities in the Dutch society. This year it celebrates its 75th anniversary.
Presenting the award, chairman of the selection committee Wim van Eekelen, who has served as Minister of Defence, Senator, Secretary General of the Western European Union and currently president of the European Movement the Netherlands, stated that the foundation does not distinguish between ambassadors of large and small countries.
It takes into consideration how each ambassador effectively uses his/her public persona in making the presence of his/her country felt in the Netherlands and in promoting relations between the two countries.
Wim Van Eekelen mentioned that this year?s choice was unanimous. He underlined that ambassador Evriviades served his country in an outstanding manner, characterised by his dynamism, dignity, immense energy and humour. His work positively improved the relations between Cyprus and the Netherlands, with the culmination of the recent first visit ever of Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende to Cyprus.
Three years ago, continued Van Eekelen, when the ambassador came to the Netherlands it was not certain that Cyprus would join the EU or whether the Netherlands would have supported Cyprus? accession.
Receiving the award, the Cypriot diplomat thanked the foundation for the honour bestowed upon him, emphasising the collective efforts of all the members of the Cyprus Embassy in The Hague.
He stated that his tenure was full of intensity, challenges and education.
Evriviades expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the support of the Dutch government to Cyprus? accession to the EU, stressing that his mission would have been complete with the solution of the Cyprus question.
He referred to the long standing historical links between the two countries ? this year marks the 330th anniversary of the appointment in 1673 of the Dutch Consul to Cyprus ? and paid tribute to the Netherlands for its active role in the promotion of international law which dates back to the 17th century with the pioneering works of Hugo Grotius.
Apart from the commemorative statuette which was presented, the award also included a monetary sum of ? 2.500,00, which the ambassador donated to the Pancyprian Association for Children with Cancer or any other related life threatening diseases ?Kane Mia Efhi? (Make-a-Wish). The Association has fulfilled scores of wishes of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot cancer affected children.
