Positive Commission progress report expected
Nicosia, Oct 31 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has described as ''positive'' a report by the European Commission on Cyprus' accession course.
''We understand that the progress report is positive for us. All committees who have visited Cyprus for an on the spot investigation of the harmonization effort and the implementation of measures have given a position opinion,'' the Spokesman said.
Replying to questions, he said that all competent authorities assure that Cyprus will be ready to join the Union on May 1 next year.
Chrysostomides said that all indications are that the progress report on Turkey's accession course contains many negative remarks, including a reference to Ankara's refusal so far to comply with a European Court of Human Rights ruling relating to human rights violations in Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas.
