Nicosia, Mar 31 (CNA) -- The European Commission supports fully the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in his effort to convince the two Cyprus sides to accept the serious compromise noting that if the chance is missed ''then history will not judge us kindly''.

In his opening remark at a joint press conference in Strasbourg with European Parliament President Pat Cox and current European Union President, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, Prodi said that it is the ''first time we have a real substantial possibility of concluding this long standing problem of the island and we can perhaps reach result without any kind of infringement of community law''.

Noting that Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen is in Burgenstock, Switzerland, representing the European Commission in the negotiations, he said he had authorided him ''to give full support to the UN Secretary General to convince the two sides to accept the serious compromise put forward by the Secretary'' General.

''For the first time we have a real substantial possibility of concluding this long standing problem of the island and we can perhaps reach result without any kind of infringement of community law. I have asked them to be flexible and not to miss this opportunity which is a unique opportunity for peace. If we miss this chance then history will not judge us kindly'', he said.
