Cyprus consents to temporary detour road by occupation forces
2004-11-02 10:17:59

Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has revealed that the Turkish occupation forces are constructing a detour road through the Zodia – Astromeritis area which goes through a minefield, and at the same time violating the property rights of Greek Cypriot owners in the area.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the government consented to the temporary construction of the detour at the Astromeritis passage, to enable the short-term requisition of the Greek Cypriots’ properties, provided the occupation forces agree. The UN, said Chrysostomides, conveyed the proposal, to the occupation forces and the government is expecting a reply.

“We agree on this temporary detour just like the occupation forces want, provided that the minefield will be cleared and there will be a proper requisition and compensation of the Greek Cypriots who own property in the buffer zone and at the same time to open the Dherynia passage”, he added.|

Chrysostomides said that the UN are fully informed on the issue and are recording the events and are trying to secure a reply from the occupation forces “on our conciliatory proposal”.

If there is no reply, “our old suggestion for the opening of the Astromeritis – Zodias road will still be valid”, the Spokesman said.
