Paphos, Nov 5 (CNA) There are clear statements on the part of the US and the EU that the illegal regime of the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus will never be recognised, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stated.

Speaking upon his return from Brussels, where he attended the European Union summit, President Papadopoulos noted there is no similarity between a US initiative to recognize the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and the issue of the recognition of the pseudostate.

''There are clear statements from the US as well as from other states that the illegal regime will never be recognized'', President Papadopoulos said.

''None of the EU member states can recognize the illegal regime since we have signed with each one of them the Accession Treaty'', according to which the whole of Cyprus became a member of the EU but the implementation of the Acquis has been suspended in the areas occupied by Turkish troops'', President Papadopoulos said.

Asked to comment on a statement made by Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean - Claude Juncker on the possibility to suspend membership talks should Turkey deviate from the path of reforms, the President said that this opinion is included as a provision in the Commission's report on Turkey and it is also shared by many other states.
