Defence Minister: Turkey cannot yet be considered European state
Nicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) -- Turkey cannot yet be considered a European state, Cypriot Minister of Defence Kyriakos Mavronicolas has said, commenting on the continuing Turkish provocations in the Aegean.
Mavronicolas said that because no one can tell yet that the military or the politicians in Turkey have prevailed, ''what we must have in mind is that our readiness must be excellent because the facts can be much different than what we expect them to be.''
As regards Turkish provocations in the Aegean, Mavronicolas said that Greece and Cyprus are closely monitoring the whole situation, adding that with their repeated provocations the Turkish military is causing great uneasiness at the moment.
''Turkey is showing in these critical days a very different face from that expected and so the understanding should be that Turkey cannot yet be considered a European democratic state,'' he added.
