Cyprus to be represented at Arafat's funeral
Nicosia, Nov 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus President, government and political parties will be represented at today's funeral of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Cairo.
Honourary President of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK Vassos Lyssarides, former President of the Cyprus parliament and a personal friend of Yasser Arafat, will attend the funeral representing Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.
The Cyprus government will be represented by Foreign Minister George Iacovou.
Lyssarides and Iacovou flew last night to Athens from where they will fly on to Cairo today, on the same plane with Greece's Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis.
Lyssarides said on departure that ''Cyprus has lost an important friend because his voice and the voice of Palestine represented the Cypriot struggle at the various fora from which we were excluded''.
Iacovou said Yasser Arafatís death ''leaves a gap both for the Palestinians and the course towards peace''.
The two largest parties on the island, the leftwing AKEL, a government partner, and opposition rightwing Democratic Rally, will be represented by deputies Andros Kyprianou and Eleni Theocharous, respectively.
