Nicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides announced today that Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who is currently presiding over the European Council, would be visiting Cyprus on December 6.
Dutch government sources told CNA that Balkenende would be holding talks in Nicosia with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, which would focus on issues concerning the December 17 EU summit, with emphasis on whether or not to grant Turkey a date to commence accession negotiations with the Union.
In this context, Papadopoulos and Balkenende will discuss the Cypriot government positions and all that Nicosia wishes to be included in the conclusions of the European Council, in order to agree to Ankara beginning accession negotiations.
The sources noted that in the same context Dutch Minister for European Affairs Atzo Nikolai would be visiting Ankara on December 7 for talks with the Turkish government.
Apart from Cyprus, Balkenende will be visiting some other EU member states for talks in view of the European Council.
Balkenende will also be holding talks in The Hague with heads of other EU member states, whom he will not be able to include in his tour. Today he is meeting in the Dutch capital with the Danish Prime Minister.
