US refrains from comment on need for Turkey to recognise Cyprus

Washington, Dec 7 (CNA) -- Washington has refrained from any comment on the need for Ankara to recognise Nicosia, a European Union member, as Turkey is seeking to secure a date at next week's EU summit for the start of accession negotiations.
Asked whether the EU should decide on a date for Ankara when it does not recognise Cyprus, Adam Ereli said he did not have ''anything really to add to that beyond what our long-stated position is, while we're not a member of the European Union, we do support Turkey's accession to the EU.''
''The modalities for that is a matter that needs to be negotiated between the European Union and Turkey,'' he added.
