Cyprus President briefs National Council in view of EU Summit
Nicosia, Dec 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus' National Council was briefed here today by President Tassos Papadopoulos over his meetings in view of the 16-17 December EU summit that will decide whether to fix a date for the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey.
Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said that the members of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus issue and consists of the parliamentary parties, exchanged views.
Responding to questions, the Spokesman said the Council will convene again if the President decides it is necessary to do so.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
