Cyprus youth call on international community to launch new Cyprus initiative
Nicosia, Dec 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus National Preparatory Committee (NPC) on the 16th World Festival of Youth and Student (WFYS), that will take place in Venezuela in 2005, has called upon the international community, particularly the UN and the EU, to undertake as soon as possible, a new initiative concerning the Cyprus problem.
In a declaration the Committee said through this initiative ways and means must be sought ''in order to safeguard the legitimate concerns of the Greek Cypriot community in the Annan plan, without reopening the whole plan for negotiations, which remains the base to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.''
''Such a development will greatly facilitate the pro-peace, progressive forces in the Greek Cypriot community to encourage the people in order to reach a solution in the period ahead,'' the declaration said, adding that ''within this framework, both Greek Cypriots and the World's progressive forces must express their solidarity even further to the pro-peace forces in the Turkish Cypriot community, that fight against the status quo in the island in order to maintain and strengthen even further their willingness and determination for the solution of the Cyprus problem.''
The Cyprus NPC on the 16th WFYS, that will take place in Venezuela August 5 - 13, 2005, has been formed by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Youth and Student Organisations of EDON, CTP Youth Branch, NEDIK, TKP Youth Branch, NEOS, BKP Youth Branch, NE.OI., KSP Youth Branch and YBP Youth.
The declaration, presented during a press conference by EDON General Secretary George Loukaides, who said that ''part of the world struggle for peace and justice is undoubtedly the anti-imperialist struggle of the Cypriot people and youth to find a just, viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem.''
''Our vision is a free, united, independent, sovereign, demilitarised Cyprus where all its people, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites and Latins, will live in conditions of peace, security and prosperity,'' it noted.
''In order to achieve that, we will continue, as a youth movement, to stand by the side of our people in the struggle for a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, with a single sovereignty, one international personality and one citizenship as provided in the two high level agreements of 1977 and 1979, on all relevant UN resolutions and the International Law,'' the declaration said.
It added that ''we are looking forward to a united Cyprus were acquis communautaire and UN Charter will safeguard the basic human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as the political equality of the two communities.''
The Cyprus NPC also warmly saluted the oncoming realisation of the 16th WFYS in Venezuela and commits itself in proceeding systematically so as to ensure a massive participation of the youth of Cyprus and the vest informing possible with regard to the 16th WFYS, its content and character.
The declaration said the activities of the Cyprus NPC, both through pre-festival events and through the presence of Cyprus representatives in the Festival itself, should involve the struggle against imperialism and war, the factual political, material and moral support of all the people who fight for peace, democracy, popular sovereignty and social progress, the mobilisation and promotion of efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem and reunification of the country and people.
Also, the effort to inform and make young people and students on a world level conscious of the anti-imperialistic struggle of the people of Cyprus, communicating, at the same time, the wish of the youth, Greek Cypriots, Turkish-Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites and Lateens, to live in a free, united, sovereign, independent, federal and demilitarised country, the struggle to protect the environment and for sustainable development and the presentation and promotion of problems, which torment the youth of Cyprus. The creation of channels of communication with young people in relation to the social phenomena they face in their everyday life, as well as the character and content of the Festival, it noted.
The Cyprus NPC invites through its declaration all the youth and students of Cyprus to participate in the process of the preparation, as well as in the Festival itself.
