Cyprus to be represented at UN small island states meeting
Nicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Ambassador Sotos Zakheos will represent Cyprus at the International Meeting for the 10-Year Review of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of the Small Island Developing States, which takes place in Mauritius from 10-14 January.
The meeting will evaluate the work done in the past ten years with regard to solving problems of small island developing states have to deal with. It takes place under UN auspices with the participation of all UN member states.
The Mauritius meeting will be followed in September with a high level meeting in New York.
The Barbados meeting examined problems small island developing states are facing and it was considered to be a first important step for the international community in dealing with these problems.
The European Union will be represented at a ministerial level.
