Cypriot Minister underlines need for T/C to learn about their work rights
Nicosia, Jan 13 (CNA) - Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Christos Taliadoros said here today social insurance contributions are being paid to almost three thousand Turkish Cypriots working in the free areas.
He added however that the real number of Turkish Cypriots working in the free areas of the Cyprus Republic is much larger according to unofficial estimates.
Taliadoros was speaking after a meeting with trade unionists from Greek Cypriot SEK, PEO and DEOK and Turkish Cypriot TURKSEN and DEV-IS, regarding social insurance contributions made by employers and employees.
He said that Turkish Cypriots need to be informed on their employment rights through a proper enlightenment campaign.
DEV-IS president Ali Gulle said the number of Turkish Cypriots who work in the free areas is around 6.000-8.000. He added that in previous years the number who paid their social insurance contributions had reached 4.000 while now it is down to 3.000.
Gulle told the meeting that a number of Turkish Cypriots working in the free areas have reported that they receive lower salaries compared to Greek Cypriots and that some employers do not pay their social insurance contributions.
The Minister of Labour said inspections are carried out in working areas, which will be expanded even more to bring to justice those employers who do not pay the social insurance contribution of heir employees.
Taliadoros also referred to some occasions in which Turkish Cypriots, for their own reasons, agree with their employers not to make the social insurance contributions.
The Minister said Turkish Cypriots need to be informed on the rights they have and benefits they can acquire such as sick leave, disability benefit, unemployment benefit and pension through the publication of special leaflets.
