Iacovou briefs Archbishop Audi on Cyprus problem

Beirut, Jan 14 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou met today in Beirut with Orthodox Archbishop Audi, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem and the prospects for a settlement, as well as Turkey's European Union accession course and the consequences this will have.
Speaking after the meeting, Iacovou said they shared the opinion that relations between Cyprus and Lebanon were on a very good level and that "we must all work together to promote our relations in many practical sectors."
During their meeting, Iacovou and Archbishop Audi discussed the role of religion in international politics and the situation of the Orthodox in Lebanon.
They also discussed in detail international matters and exchanged views on local and regional affairs.
Archbishop Audi expressed gratitude to Iacovou for the help Cyprus offered the Lebanese during the troubles in their country.
Iacovou briefed the Archbishop on the Cyprus problem and the prospects for a settlement and referred to Cyprus' accession to the EU and the horizons this opens for the strengthening of relations with Lebanon.
They also discussed Turkey's EU accession course and the various and multilateral consequences this will have.
Today, Iacovou will meet with his Lebanese counterpart Mahmoud Hammoud.
He returns home tonight.
