Over 300.000 CYP collected in fund drive for SA Asia
Nicosia, Jan 14 (CNA) -- Over 300.000 Cyprus pounds (around 600 thousand US dollars) is estimated to have been raised during today's daylong street collection organised by the Cyprus Welfare Council for the relief of the victims of the tsunami disaster in southeast Asia.
Honorary President of the Cyprus Welfare Council and President of the Cyprus Red Cross, First Lady, Fotini Papadopoulou told CNA that ''the people of Cyprus, in a few hours, in a single day, gave such a large amount of money showing the grandeur of their soul''.
She thanked everyone who supported and participated in today’s fund raising.
President of the Cyprus Welfare Council Stavros Olympios expressing his satisfaction for the amount of money raised said that this will be over 300.000 Cyprus pounds.
The distribution of the financial assistance to the affected areas will be done through International Committee of the Red Cross.
