2005-01-18 12:45:42

Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the December European Council conclusions were clear that Turkey should sign the protocol to extend its customs union with the new EU members, including Cyprus, before October 3rd, when Turkey is to begin accession negotiations.

Asked if Turkey was obliged to sign the protocol before October 3rd or at least prior to the commencement of the negotiations, Chrysostomides said ''the text of the negotiations is clear, it speaks about the signing by Turkey of the protocol to extend the Ankara Agreement before October 3rd, 2005.''

He noted that the EU had set a date to commence negotiations with Ankara and ''in order to change this date, other talks must take place between the EU and Turkey.''
