Cyprus condemns Nazi atrocities
Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus joined its voice today with the rest of the world and condemned the atrocities committed during World War II by the Nazis, as leaders from many nations gather in Auschwitz to mark 60 years since the liberation of this infamous concentration camp, where thousands of people were killed.
''The world community condemns these atrocities and Cyprus condones this condemnation. This is a reminder of the need to respect democracy, human rights and to see to it that such horrific phenomena are not repeated,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said.
He noted that ''the visit by President Tassos Papadopoulos to Auschwitz reminds all the atrocities committed by the Nazis in the Second World War.''
Responding to questions, he said such gatherings of world leaders offer the chance to participants for an exchange of views.
